The first two singles from the Eli Young Band's latest album,
Life at Best,
brought the band their first and second chart-toppers. Therefore, there
can't help but be a little pressure when choosing a follow-up song. The
choice, of course, was "Say Goodnight," which the band's Mike Eli tells
CBS Local is "one of the more ballad-ish songs on the record."
"We've released three singles from the record, and they're all totally
different," band member Jon Jones adds. "We've always tried to make
records that have a cohesive sound to them, but you know you're
listening to different songs."
While the foursome write together quite frequently, their latest tune, which was penned by the Civil Wars' John Paul White, touches on a topic they're not all that comfortable writing about together.
"It's kind of a sappy love song, which is tough for the four of us to
sit down and write," says Jon. "To hear it done really well compelled us
to give it a shot. It was a different kind of song for us that we had
never really attempted before."
"We're songwriters and we love to write songs," Mike adds, "but a great
song is a great song. We heard one of [White's] versions that he had
recorded and just loved it."
For the tune's video, the band decided to take it an unexpected direction and make a sci-fi love story.
"When we saw the first line of the treatment, and saw that it said a
robot does this, we were like, 'What?' But by the end of the script, we
were like, 'This is OK. I get it,'" Mike Eli tells The Boot. "The way it was shot, which makes the robot come to life, is very cool."
